When I started collecting my thoughts to post my very first blog ever, I became a little anxious. Wondering if what I would type would ever be read by anyone other than Mrs. Damelio, and almost hoping it wouldnt. Then it kind of hit me....this is not a right or wrong assignment, this is how I feel. Just me expressing my thoughts and feelings about my career path and my ideas of what a Nurse really is and what they stand for.
I have always wanted to be a nurse.I can remember being 5 years old and having a toy ambulance and nurse and doctor, and I always wanted to be the nurse. I never once waivered my aspiratons, but I certainly took the long road to get started. To me a nurse is someone who can work in many different capacities, a provider of healthcare, an educator, a leader, a friend, ect. A very educated individual that choose to channel their time and energy into making a difference in the lives of others. Someone who is caring and empathetic as well as focused and persistant. I person who is not afraid to work long, hard hours and get satisfaction from their job.
I think nurses are a "special type of people" Very loyal to their job and patients. They typically think "outside of the box" , in fact critical thinking is just part of doing your daily routine. I look forward to possibly working in the ER or on a MET (code) team. For some reason I like the idea of having to make split second decisions, and knowing someone is depending on me and my team for their next breath. I know that may sound like I am actually being selfish in a way, but its totally not. I dont want to do it to make myself look good or to get some thrill for the day, but just the feeling of life (if that makes any sense). To know that applying what I will have learned can save someones father or child. Its a very emotional feeling that is hard to put into words, but a feeling that I've always had in me.A feeling that makes me certain that I have choosen the right path.
As you can see I think very highly of the nursing profession. Nurses have come a long way, gaining much deserved respect along the way.
I cant wait to be part of that team : )
I'm so glad you came to the "not a right or wrong" assignment conclusion. Happy Blogging :-)
